The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first of its two prescription medicines for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).
The agency said that its new drug approval will be announced late last month.
It is the first FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction to treat a male sexual disorder, which affects men in their 40s and 50s.
The drug has been available for patients since 2005 and the first FDA-approved treatment for a male sexual disorder since 1996, but the drug has been under a "label" for more than three years.
The drug is called flibanserin, and it is the only one of its kind to treat male sexual disorder. It's already available on prescription in the US.
The FDA says it is considering filing a generic version of flibanserin at a lower cost than the brand version, but it has not yet received approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
In its latest study, Pfizer, a company that makes Viagra and Cialis, said it is investigating the drug in patients with ED.
In clinical trials, which were stopped early because of serious side effects, the drug improved erections in men with ED. A total of 6,848 men who had taken the drug in the past year, compared to 751 who had not, showed a positive response.
In a review of the drugs' clinical trials in 2006, there were no deaths and there were no serious side effects.
In a letter to the FDA, Pfizer's chief executive officer, John Lechleiter, said the company was evaluating the drugs and that it was "safer" to start treatment.
The company is evaluating the drug for a marketing authorization in the US in January.
The drug, which treats ED in men, will only be available for the first four weeks of treatment with the medication on the first of any prescribed drug applications. The first four weeks of treatment, when it is most effective, should be taken as a last resort.
Pfizer said it would continue to manufacture flibanserin for marketing approval in the US.

The drug's maker, Pfizer, said it was evaluating the drug in a second clinical trial of six men who took Viagra or other erectile dysfunction medications, before the drug was approved.
The FDA said that the drugs are effective in helping men with ED to get and keep an erection, and that the drugs have been used in a number of clinical trials. The drugs have been shown to improve the ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
Pfizer has yet to submit a generic version of the drug.
Pfizer is considering filing a generic version of the drug in the US in the second half of next year, but it will be rejected before the FDA approves it in the first half of next year, the company said.
The drug's manufacturer, Eli Lilly, has said the FDA has decided not to renew its approval request and that it will remain the same until the drug is approved.
A spokesman for Lilly said: "Our research has shown that flibanserin has similar efficacy and safety to other similar treatments for ED, including sildenafil (Viagra)."
The drug was approved in the United States by the FDA for treating ED in men, but the FDA had only approved the treatment of erectile dysfunction for a maximum of one year.
The drug's manufacturer, Eli Lilly, has said it was considering filing a generic version of the drug.
